It's Nice Today: On Climate, Comfort, and Pleasure

et al., Brussels

Since its earliest days, the architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal have based their practice on concerns relating to climate and the exploration of bioclimatic solutions. Their unique approach, integrating greenhouses as fluid transition space between inside and outside, has made them stand out internationally.

The book It's Nice Today: On Climate, Comfort, and Pleasure presents a scientific study of the thermal performance of winter gardens in four projects by Lacaton&Vassal.

A collaboration with the environmental design consultancy Atmos Lab enabled the architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal to better understand the positive impact of this approach through long-term detailed measurements under various climatic conditions. The publication presents the methodology and results of this study. It demonstrates the effectiveness of winter gardens as thermal buffers, reducing heating and cooling costs while improving the spatial qualities in buildings.

On 20 February 2025, the authors Florencia Collo, Rafael Alonso Candau and Olivier Dambron from Atmos Lab will present the publication in our exhibition space et al. This presentation will be followed by a discussion with Alexia Menec, architect at Karbon' and former resident of a Lacaton&Vassal building, and Didier Vander Heyden, PEB advisor (Performance Energétique du Bâtiment) and member of the collective Les limites à la PEB.

The book has been edited by Anne Lacaton & Jean-Philippe Vassal and published by Ruby Press.
