Since the beginning of their careers, architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal have based their practice on climate-related concerns and the exploration of bioclimatic solutions. Their unique approach, incorporating greenhouses as fluid transitional spaces between indoors and outdoors, has gained them international recognition. The book It's Nice Today: On Climate, Comfort, and Pleasure presents a scientific study on the thermal performance of winter gardens in four Lacaton&Vassal projects.
A collaboration with the environmental design office Atmos Lab allowed the architects to better understand the positive impact of this approach through detailed long-term measurements under different climatic conditions. The publication presents the methodology and results of this study. It demonstrates the effectiveness of winter gardens as thermal buffers, reducing heating and cooling costs while enhancing the spatial qualities of buildings.
